“Qualifications Make a Difference”

An interview with Les Bailey

Having completed 30 years with TELSTRA, technician Les Bailey thought that getting work in the open market would be quite easy. The realisation was that without the qualifications companies would not even look at him. Quite ironic when he had spent a greater part of his working life in TELSTRA as a trainer actually instructing and training the technicians and his knowledge and experience was in most instances far superior.

Faced with a bleak outlook Les said he was more than pleased after speaking with Ian Millner from Milcom, about what choices he had.

Milcom Communications’ training programs provided Les with the formal qualifications he needed. But as Ian outlined to him, because of his experience and knowledge over a broad range of areas covered in the courses he was able to get Recognition of Prior Learning (RPL) for a greater part of the curriculum. This not only saved him time in doing the courses but it also greatly reduced the cost.

Ian says that "we are not in the business of tying people into a long winded course if we can give them RPL". Les' problem was that because of the policy of not providing formal written recognition of courses he was obviously disadvantaged, but his experience and knowledge was excellent. "There are many contractors out there in the same situation".

Les cannot speak highly enough of the Milcom programs. Having completed the Open Registration, Structured Cabling and the Co-axial Cabling courses he says "you need to have a broad portfolio, because the customer demands vary and you need the qualifications to do it".

Les spoke to us whilst on holidays, "I have been that busy I thought if I don't take a weeks break now I won't get the chance to spend anytime away with the kids. I just have that much work booked up it's not funny".

Milcom programmes are available on www.milcom.com.au and Milcom’s RPL services are accessible on www.professionalq.com.au.
